EL PASO, Texas- The UTEP softball team will face I-10 rival NM State for a third and final time this season. The Miners (12-20) and Aggies (17-15) will square off in Las Cruces on Tuesday, March 25 during a televised game on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. MT.

The two programs split a pair of games during the 2014 campaign. The Aggies won the first meeting, 8-6, on Feb. 9 at the Hotel Encanto Tournament in Las Cruces, while the Miners were victorious in the second game, 5-1, on March 4 at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

Miners Defeat Aggies, 5-1, to End Drought
The UTEP softball team used timely hitting, solid pitching and clutch defensive plays during a 5-1 victory over NM State at Helen of Troy Softball Complex.


The Miners are coming off a disappointing weekend after being swept by conference foe North Texas in the Sun City. The Mean Green (22-10, 8-1 Conference USA) are currently in second place in the conference standings behind first-place No. 19 Tulsa (28-3, 6-0 C-USA) - UTEP's next opponent after NM State.

Hitting has proved to be a consistent for the squad during 2014. UTEP has a .316 team-batting average and 17 home runs. Erika Arcuri leads the way with a .393 average (42-for-107), while Miraya Montiel (.370, 30-for-81), Ashley Eldridge (.363, 37-for-102), Tahla Wade (.353, 36-for-102), Colleen Hohman (.342, 26-for-76) and Samantha Alvillar(.330, 29-for-88) have all connected on pitches consistently.

Hohman and Alanna Leasauare tied with six home runs a piece and 20 RBI each. Eldridge has paced the team in RBI (27) and has tallied 60 total bases (19 singles, 15 doubles, one triple, two home runs). Arcuri and Eldridge have each stolen six bags.

Arcuri has a team-best 23 runs scored, while Eldridge has crossed home plate 22 times and Alvillar 21 times.

In the circle, Danielle Pearson is 5-8 and Hohman is 3-4 on the season. Pearson leads the staff with 85.2 innings and 34 Ks, while Hohman's 4.80 ERA is a team best. Taylor Grohman and Kaitlin Fifieldhave each won a pair of games.

Tuesday's contest will be one of two games in which UTEP will have some television exposure. The Miners and No. 19 Golden Hurricane will be seen on FOX Sports Southwest on March 29 (2 p.m.) in Tulsa, Okla.

Series vs. NM State

UTEP is 10-21 all time against NM State.

The Miners won the last meeting on March 4, 2014 - their first win against the Aggies since March 23, 2010. Pearson and Hohman combined for seven innings, six hits and only two walks. Hohman earned the win, while Pearson notched the save. Montiel went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Wade, Leasau, Hohman and Kayla Blacktallied an RBI each.

Scouting NM State

NM State is currently on a four-game losing skid. The Aggies fell to Colorado State, 6-2, and Fresno State, 6-4 on March 15, to Cal Poly, 1-0 (March 16), and recently to New Mexico, 4-3 (March 19).

Sluggers Staci Rodriguez and Fiana Fianu have each hit 10 home runs to lead the Aggies. Rodriguez's .427 batting average (35-for-82) and RBI (35) leads the team. Finau has tallied 25 RBI and is hitting .337 (31-for-92).

In the circle, Makayla McAdams has team-leading 3.92 ERA and has forged a 6-3 record in 60.1 innings. Celisha Walker is an even 5-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 68.2 innings, and Karysta Donisthorpe (6-7) leads the staff with 60 strikeouts, in 68.2 innings of work.
