Softball Comes Up Short against Southern Miss

El Paso, Texas - Camilla Carrera went 2-4 with 5 RBIs and a grand slam but the Miners weren’t able to bring home the win against Southern Miss on Sunday. The Miners (12-15, 2-1 C-USA) concluded their first conference series with a total of 35 runs scored.

A four-run second inning off of Colleen Hohman gave the Golden Eagles an early lead against the Miners.

Camilla Carrera drove in Samantha Alvillar to get the Miners on the board in the third inning. Chelsea Troupe also came home to cut the UTEP deficit to two runs.

The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning off of Joanna Krienitz giving them a 7-3 lead over UTEP.

Courtney Ware drove in Ashley Collazo who doubled in her at-bat with a single. With Ware on first Alvillar singled and Troupe walked to load the bases with Camilla Carrera coming up to bat. Carrera drove a ball to center field for the grand slam and her 17th RBI of the season.

Moffett singled off of Krienitz in the fifth inning representing the go-ahead run with two outs. Shiflet drove a ball to center field but Troupe made a dazzling play in center field to end the inning and save the potential go-ahead run.

Shiflet came up to bat in the top of the seventh with runners in scoring position and drove the go-head two run single up the middle for the Eagles giving them a 9-7 lead.

Collazo hit one out of the park in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Miners within a run of the Golden Eagles. Ware reached on a single to represent the tying run but the Miners couldn’t bring her home.



Krienitz (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season after pitching 5 innings giving up five runs and 10 hits.

The Miners will travel to Houston for a three game series starting on Saturday March 17  at 12:00 MT.
