Miners Open Conference Play With Two Wins Over Golden Eagles

El Paso, Texas - UTEP and Southern Miss squared off in a doubleheader on Saturday to open the Conference USA schedule. The two teams combined for a total of 52 runs in two back-and-forth affairs. UTEP (12-14, 2-0 C-USA) took game one in eight innings with a final of 13-12. Game two found the Miners victorious with a final score of 14-13.
UTEP and Southern Miss combined for 15 runs in the first inning of the game with the Eagles scoring 7 in the top half and the Miners scoring 8 in the bottom half. Both teams had a two run top of the third giving UTEP a 10-9 lead over the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the top of the third scoring a run to bring the score to 10-10.
The back-and-forth scoring tied the game again when the Golden Eagles got two runs off of relief pitcher Joanna Krienitz.
Scoreless innings in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frame drove the game to extra innings. Krienitz pitched her fourth scoreless inning in the eighth setting the Miners up for a walk-off victory in the bottom of the stanza.
Krienitz picked up the win pitching seven relief innings giving up three runs on five hits.
Samantha Alvillar scored on a double by Carrera to get the UTEP scoring started in the second game of the day. Black drove in Troupe and Carrera to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. Oranger added a single to bring Black home for the fourth Miner run of the day.
Troupe belted her second home run of the day in the bottom of the second. The senior hit her 11th home run of the season with Ware on base. Carrera followed her with a home run of her own to set a new school standard of 15 in a season. Carrera broke Troupe’s previous record of 14 set last season.
An eight run inning by the eagles in the third gave them an 8-7 advantage over UTEP.
Carrera hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth to give UTEP a 9-8 edge over the Eagles.
The Miners extended their lead scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth. UTEP had no hits in the inning but scored the runs on three errors and three hit batsman.
The Eagles staged a rally scoring one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh but could not complete the comeback. Krienitz struck out Turang with the tying run on third to end the ball game.
Krienitz pitched 4.2 innings in relief of starter Cynthia Villastrigo giving up four earned runs on eight hits and striking out five.
Carrera went 3-4 with 5 RBIs and three runs scored.
The Miners and Golden Eagles will wrap up the three game series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
