Miners to Take on Rival Aggies at Helen of Troy Softball Complex

EL PASO, Texas - After coming off an 0-3 weekend, the UTEP softball team will take on I-10 rival NM State on Tuesday, March 4 (6 p.m. MT) at Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Fans are encouraged to wear orange for free admission.

UTEP is coming off losses to San Jose State (10-8), Pacific (6-3) and No. 7 Washington (9-0 five innings) at the 2014 Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. NM State just completed its trip to Las Vegas, Nev. at the Eller Media Stadium Classic - falling to Weber State (5-3) and Depaul (8-1), while defeating Seton Hall (14-5), Binghampton (13-3 five innings) and UNLV (5-4).
Series vs. NM State
UTEP is 9-21 all time against NM State. The Miners have dropped their last seven meetings to the Aggies - including the Feb. 9 loss.
The Aggies topped the Miners, 8-6, in a dramatic back-and-forth contest. The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Tatum Reedy RBI single to left center in the second inning and solo home run to left field in the fourth inning, while Kelsey Dodd right field single scored Brennalyn Nakamura to in the third inning.
The Miners exploded for six runs in the sixth inning on multiple Aggies' fielding miscues. The wild inning began and ended with Samantha Alvillar. The junior singled to left to open the inning - a wild pitch would get her to home plate for the Miners' first run, while she hit a single down the left field line that plated Danielle Pearson, giving her squad momentum and a 6-3 advantage.
The Aggies answered though, scoring five runs in the bottom sixth - highlighted by a Lacey Rother grand slam to left field to seal the victory.
Scouting NM State
Staci Rodriguez and Fiana Finau lead the Aggies in the batters box. Rodriguez is pacing the team with 24 RBI, while Finau has hit a team-leading eight long balls. The two sluggers have combined for 15 home runs and 44 RBI.
In the circle, the Aggies are versatile in all areas. Makayla McAdams leads the team with a 5-1 record, while Celisha Walker has a team-leading 3.00 ERA and Karysta Donisthorpe has 36 strikeouts.
