UTEP Softball to Play at Libby Matson Tournament

EL PASO, Texas - After dropping a pair of games to No. 10 Arizona in Tucson, the UTEP softball team will travel Stockton, Calif. to compete at the Libby Matson Tournament hosted by Pacific (Feb. 28-March 2) this weekend.

The Miners (6-11) will open with No. 7 Washington (Noon MT) and San Jose State (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 28. On Saturday, UTEP will take on Pacific (5:45 p.m.) and CSU-Bakersfield (8 p.m.) and will close out the weekend against Washington (11 a.m.) on Sunday.

Series vs. Washington

UTEP face Washington on Friday for the first time in program history.

Scouting Washington

The Huskies (13-2) are ranked No. 7 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll.

Kylee Lahners leads the squad in hitting (.500), home runs (six) and RBI (28). Ali Aguilar is hitting .435 with two long balls and 15 RBI. Washington is 25-of-29 in stolen bases and has combined for 13 home runs, 121 runs and a .376 batting average. Bryana Walker and Kaitlin Inglesby are the Huskies' leading pitchers. Washington's ace, Walker is 8-1 and leads the team in ERA (1.26), innings pitched (50.0), complete games (six) and strikeouts (69). Inglesby is 4-1 with 25 Ks in 35.0 innings of work.

Series vs. San Jose State

UTEP is 4-7 all-time against San Jose State as the two programs used to compete in the Western Athletic Conference against each in 2004 and 2005. The Miners have won their last three contests versus the Spartans.

The Miners took down the Spartans, 7-4, on Feb. 25, 2010 at Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Stacie Townsend picked up the win in the circle, throwing six innings and fanning 10 batters. She also was 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored. Camilla Carrera hit a home run, en route to a 2-for-3 day, two RBI and two runs scored.

Scouting San Jose State

 

 

The Spartans are 10-5 on the season.

Jessie Hufstetler is hitting .533 (24-for-45) to lead the team, while contributing two home runs and 10 RBI. Jessica Garcia is hitting .347 and leads the squad in home runs (four) and RBI (26). Allison Lang is the ace in the circle, compiling a 6-1 record with 24 Ks in 41.2 innings.

Series vs. Pacific

Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two programs.

Scouting Pacific

The Tigers are off to a 3-8 record in 2014.

Taylor Petty leads the team with a .567 (17-for-30) batting average and eight RBI. Megan Foglesong and Cassidy Gustafson have each hit a home run - the only two as a team. In the circle, Tori Shepard is 2-2 with a 5.33 ERA in 21.0 innings. Dani Bonnet leads the team in strikeouts (17) and innings pitched (23.2).

Series vs. CSU-Bakersfield

UTEP defeated CSU-Bakersfield, 4-0, in the only meeting between the programs on Feb. 15, 2008.

Renee DiPuccio pitched seven innings on three hits and three Ks, while Simone Holland was 2-for-3 with a couple RBI.

Scouting CSU-Bakersfield

The Roadrunners are off to a slow start with a 2-13 record.

Karissa Veiga is hitting .407 (22-for-54) to lead the team, along with 10 RBI. CSU-Bakersfield has hit two home runs with a combined .248 batting average. Kelsie Monroe is 1-5, with a 3.43 ERA in 44.0 innings.
