Miners Travel to Nashville for the Weekend

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP softball team will be in Nashville, Tenn. for a double header against Belmont on Thursday. The Miners (6-8) will continue their road trip in Nashville when they play in the Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb on Friday and Saturday.
The Miners will take on the Bruins (6-6) in a double header (2:30 / 4:30 p.m. MT) at Rose Park. The Orange and Blue opened their first home stand of the season on Saturday, Feb. 23 losing to NM Sate, 5-4, but came from behind to beat South Dakota, 3-2. On Sunday they lost to South Dakota, 5-3, while their rematch against NM State was postponed due to high winds.
UTEP fans had the opportunity to see the long ball during the home stand. Senior Kayleigh Walts hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot against rival NM State and a solo shot on Sunday; while freshman Kawehiokalani Netane hit her first of the season, a two-run shot that proved to be the winning runs against South Dakota Saturday night.
Junior Alanna Leasau went deep for the third time this season on Sunday and leads the team with 16 RBI thus far. Netane is batting .410, while junior Erika Arcuri is second with a .341 average. Belmont is on a three-game losing streak including a 5-4 loss to Samford on Sunday.
The Bruins have hit all but two home runs so far into 2013. Kat Hollingsworth has one of the two and leads her squad in hitting (.439) and RBI (10). Mia Vierra has the other home run and ranks third in hitting (.343) and second in RBI (eight). Pitcher Carolyn Snodgress (2-1) has a 1.01 ERA in 27.2 innings.
The Miners will continue play in the Purple and Gold Challenge against IPFW at 1 p.m. MT and Lipscomb at 3:15 p.m. MT on Friday.
