Softball Falters Against Stephen F. Austin

El Paso, Texas - The Miners fell to 4-10 in the 2012 campaign after they fell to Stephen F. Austin on the final day of the Fairfield Inn North-Texas shootout in Waco, Texas on Sunday. UTEP couldn’t hold on to an early 5-0 lead and two four-run innings by SFA allowed the comeback victory.

Courtney Ware lead off the second inning with a single to center and after Tahla Wade popped up the next two batters reached on a fielders choice. Kayla Black was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a single by Kayla Oranger drove home two runs for UTEP. Samantha Alvillar was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases and Camilla Carrera drove  a single up the middle to plate two more runs. Chelsea Troupe added the fifth and final run of the inning on a single that brought Alvillar home.

Colleen Hohman held the Lumberjacks to only one hit through the first two innings but they took her for four runs in the bottom of the third. A leadoff walk, a double to center, and another walk loaded the bases for SFA. The bases were cleared when Cadie Weaver reached third base on a throwing error. Charlotte Singleton brought Weaver home on a sac bunt.

The Miners were able to get one of the runs back in the top of the fifth inning after Troupe reached on an error. Carlie Thomas plunked her third batter of the day when she hit Ashley Collazo. Laura Ramos came up to bat next and singled Troupe home to extend the UTEP lead to 6-4.
The Lumberjacks continued their comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning off Hohman. Amber Price was hit by a pitch and then stole second base to move into scoring position. Faith Hoisager reached on a fielder’s choice but a throwing error by Collazo at third allowed her to reach second base. Price scored on the error. Jessica Arana advanced Hoisager to third on a sac bunt and Elizabeth Arana hit a sac-fly to center to bring Hoisager home to tie the game. Weaver reached base on a single and Bethany Brown picked up the go-ahead RBI on a triple to right field. Joanna Krienitz came in to pitch for Hohman after she walked Singleton. Kaitlyn Mixon knocked in the eighth run on a single. Krienitz got Linda Linares to pop up to third to end the inning.

All 14 runs in the game were unearned.The Miners had three errors in the game and the Lumberjacks had two errors. Hohman pitched 5.2 innings giving up six hits and eight unearned runs and Thomas pitched a complete game for the Lumberjacks giving up six unearned runs.

The Orange and Blue will return home to host the UTEP Invitational starting Friday March 2 and concluding on Sunday March 4. The tournament will take place at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex and include UTSA, Brown, Iowa State, and Valparaiso. UTEP will face UTSA in their first game of the tournament at noon on Friday.
