Errors Costly In Day Two Of UTEP Invite

New Mexico defeated Northern Colorado 15-4 in five innings to kickoff Saturday's games at the UTEP Invite at Helen of Troy Field.  They followed that up with a 2-0 shutout victory over San Jose State.

Utah then defeated NMSU, 4-1.

Northern Colorado outhit the Lobos 9-7 but errors proved costly as the Bears gave up four runs on four errors to the Lobos.

New Mexico went into the bottom of the third trailing UNC 4-0.  New Mexico scored 13 runs in the inning of six hits four off of UNC's errors.

Samantha Hughes led all batters, going 2-of-3 with two runs and four RBIs.  Lindsey Elcess hit the only homerun of the game and finished with two runs, one hit and two RBIs.

In the second game, New Mexico ended having two runs on seven hits while the Spartans were scoreless with five hits.  Each team committed one error. 

New Mexico's Jen Mendenhall moved to 3-7 with the win.  She went the distance, allowing five hits and four walks while fanning seven batters.

Utah defeated NMSU, 4-1, later in the day. With the score 1-0, an overthrown error by the Aggies' Kasey Sandlin gave the Utes a 2-0 lead. Diana Phillips homered in the bottom of the third inning. The Utes gave up a run off an error by catcher Andrew Holffman, but scored again in the top of the fifth when Kelly Matthews doubled into right-center for the RBI.

The tournament concludes Sunday at Helen of Troy Field with games starting at 90:00 a.m.
