Two Grand Slams Give Miners Big Win Against Buffalo
EL PASO, Texas – Simone Holland and Jennifer Stalter each sailed their second grand slams of the season, as the Miners defeated Buffalo, 21-1, at the UTEP Invitational on Friday. UTEP dropped the first game to Utah, 6-1. The Miners are now 8-4 on the season.
Holland ended the day 5-for-6 with three runs and a team-high seven RBI.
Stalter posted one run on four hits with one double, one home run and six RBI.
Ashley Ellis was UTEP’s big hitter of the day, batting .833 for the two games. She ended the day with three runs two doubles and two RBI.
Nichole Tunget remains undefeated in the circle, pitching her third win of the season against the Bulls. Kelly Curran moves to 2-4 in the loss to Utah.
Despite losing to the Utes, the Miners outscored their opponents, 23-11 while recorded 21 RBI.
In the first game, Utah got off to a 1-0 start off an RBI-single by Kara Foster. The Miners tied in the bottom of the fourth when Stalter blooped the ball over short stop, driving home pinch runner Karen Sjostrom.
The Utes’ Foster hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to go ahead 4-1. A sacrifice fly and another home run in the next frame gave Utah the 6-1 score.
The Miners opened the fourth game of the tournament with two runs, including an RBI-double by Holland.
But it was Holland’s second grand slam of the season combined with a two-run single by Stacie Townsend that put the Miners ahead 8-0.
The Bulls scored one run in the bottom of the second, off a passed ball by the Miners.
In the third, Holland laced her second home run of the game, for the 12-1 lead.
It would be nine runs in the top of the fifth, including Stalter’s grand slam that boosted the Miners past the Bulls, 21-1.
The Miners return to action Saturday, as they take on Wisconsin at 11:00 a.m. They are set to play Northern Colorado at 3:30 p.m. The tournament concludes on Sunday at Helen of Troy Field.
