El Paso, Texas – The UTEP Softball team will travel to Hammond, La. to play in the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II this weekend. The Miners will look to bounce back after Tuesday’s loss to rival New Mexico State.

The Miners will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon when they face South Dakota State (1-4) at 2 p.m. MT and then will play the tournament host Southeastern Louisiana (3-1) at 4:30 p.m. MT.

UTEP (2-4) has had a slow start to the season, while the Miners are batting .258 as a team and have yet to hit a home run.

But the Miners are getting positive production from the newcomers. South Dakota State was defeated by North Dakota, 7-3, at the Cyclone Invitational on Sunday, while Southeastern Louisiana won its last game, 4-0, over Southern. SDSU is lead by senior Devon Reick (.588 batting average) and senior Marlee Peterson (.385 BA and two home runs). Southeastern Louisiana is getting production from a couple freshman of its own.
