Miners Capture 11-3 Victory Over Santa Clara in Season Opener

El Paso, Texas - The UTEP softball team opened their season with a victory against Santa Clara in a five-inning game. The Miners run-ruled the Broncos, 11-3, winning on a run scoring single from Camilla Carrera in the bottom of the fifth.

Cynthia Villastrigo pitched all five innings for the Miners giving up three runs on four hits. Villastrigo faced 24 batters striking out six and walking seven.

Chelsea Troupe got the Miners scoring started on a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning off Santa Clara starter Carissa Theis. Kayleigh Walts reached on a walk and scored on a wild pitch and Ashley Collazo brought Carrera home on a sac-fly to left field to give UTEP an early 3-0 advantage.

With Walts on base Colleen Hohman blasted a two-run home run in the second inning. Carrera followed suit with a solo shot to center field.

Santa Clara's Jamie Wallis put the Broncos on the board with a solo home run to left field in the third inning. Breezy Bernard drove in Stephanie Fisher and Briana Knight scored on a wild pitch for the Bronco's.

Courtney Ware doubled down the left field line off of relief pitcher Jaymi Bautista driving in Collazo and Samantha Alvillar in the bottom of the third inning. Ware picked up her team-leading third RBI in the fourth inning when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Collazo scored on a wild pitch in the same frame.

The Miners were leading 10-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth with the opportunity to end the game with one run. Hohman batting second in the inning doubled to left field and was replaced by pinch runner Ashley Eldridge. Carrera came up to bat and promptly drove in the game-winning run.



The Miners scored in every inning of the game scoring their 11 runs off of 10 hits. UTEP will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to partake in the Hotel Encanto Invitational starting on Friday. They will face St. Mary's (MD) on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
