Aggies Sweep Miners In Battle of I-10




The NMSU Aggies swept the UTEP Miners in the first series of the Battle of I-10 on Wednesday at the Presley Askew Complex in Las Cruces, N.M. on Wednesday. The Miners fell 9-1 in game one then came up short, 5-2 in game two. UTEP moves to 0-7 on the season.

After a a home run in the bottom of the first inning by NMSU's Stacy Knight, the Aggies piled up six runs in the bottom of the second to pull away from the Miners 7-0. UTEP scored one run in the fourth off an RBI by Ashley Bennett to bring the score to 7-1. NMSU scored again in the fourth and sixth innings to end the game at 9-1. They failed to complete seven innings due to the eight-run rule.

Knight, Ashley Roskos and Sarah O'Niell totaled three RBIs to lead the Aggies. NMSU scored nine runs on 10 hits with seven RBIs. UTEP hit five of 22 at bats with one run and one RBI by Bennett.

The Miner connected on seven hits but could not convert in game two, scoring two runs to the Aggies' five. Sarah Seagraves, who picked up two wins for NMSU struck out eight batters.

NMSU scored four runs on three hits in the second inning to put them ahead 4-0. The Aggies recorded six hits and brought home five runs against UTEP pitcher Renee DiPuccio, who moves to 0-2 on the season.

The Miners scored one run in the third inning when Simone Holland singled to left field, bringing home Jennifer Davis, for the RBI. They scored their final run in the fourth inning off a single by Megan Whiteaker.

Errors proved to be a factor again in the Miners' losses, totaling a combined four errors. Four of the nine runs in game one were unearnered while two of the five runs were unearned in game two.

The Miners head to San Antonio, Texas on Thursday to participate in the Fastpitch Express College Classic.
