Softball Garners Three Preseason All-Conference USA Selections

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP softball's Amber Bennett, Camilla Carrera and Stacie Townsend were tabbed preseason All-Conference USA announced league officials Wednesday.

UTEP's three selections are the second most in the league behind Houston's five.

Bennett, Carrera and Townsend were All-Conference USA honorees in 2008.

A two-time All-Conference USA selection, Bennett became UTEP's career leader in runs scored (126), walks (76), hit-by-pitch (22) and assists (258). She batted .307 in 2008 and ranked 31st nationally in runs with 41, also a team-high. She tied for the top spot in doubles with 12 and tallied 50 hits and three long balls for a total of 20 RBI. On defense, she registered 37 putouts with 81 assists.

Carrera became the first Miner in UTEP softball program history to be recognized on two postseason all-league teams in the same campaign - first team All-Conference USA and the All-Freshman team. Carrera was first on the team and fourth in the league in batting average (.373) and was first on the team in hits (53), slugging percentage (.627), and ranked tied for first in doubles (12) while seeing time at catcher, first base, third base, outfield and designated player.

A two-time All-Conference USA honoree, Townsend was one of just two players to start in all of UTEP's 54 games. She led the Miners in RBI (35), home runs (9), walks (34) and on base percentage (.474) and total bases (90). She was second on the team in batting average (.344), slugging percentage (.596), runs (38) and hits (52) while posting nine multiple RBI games to rank first on the team.

As a pitcher, Townsend tallied a 2.62 ERA. She broke the single season record for wins with 12 and became the Miners' all-time career victory leader with 21. In 29 appearances including 24 starts, Townsend tossed 13 complete games and posted four shutouts with one save. She struck out a team-high 146 batters in 139 innings of work and twice hurled double-digit strikeouts including a career-high 12 vs. Memphis.



The Miners open their 2009 slate in Tempe, Ariz. at the Kajikawa Classic, Feb. 6-8.
