EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP softball team split with Siena on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. The Miners (12-16, 1-4 C-USA) handled the Saints (6-15), 11-1, in five innings in game one, but fell behind early in game two, losing 5-4.

Game One

The Miners put five runs in the first inning and six in innings three and four in dominant victory.

Freshman Jade Rodriguez made her third start of the season in the circle. She threw her first-career complete game, striking out six Saints. Sophomore Ariel Armendariz smacked a bomb to right center, a solo shot making it her first long ball of her young UTEP career. Sophomore Tahla Wade tied a career high with three RBI, while freshman Kawehiokalani Netane and senior Ashley Collazo each had two. All three Miners had two hits apiece, including senior Kayla Oranger. Netane set a career high with three runs scored.

Game Two

The Saints sniffed out a win, as they put up three runs in the first inning and two in the third.

The Miners got within one run in the bottom fifth. Junior Erika Arcuri grounded out to the short stop that brought junior Kayla Black home and sophomore Ashley Eldridge came up with a pinch-hit single that brought two runs home. But Siena’s Jessika-Jo Sandrini had a solid performance on the rubber as UTEP hitters went three up and three down to end the game. Collazo had another multi-hit game and Black added an RBI, her second on the afternoon. Freshman Danielle Pearson finished the game, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing no runs.

Next, the Miners will play take on the Pirates of East Carolina in a three-game series on Easter weekend. The first pitch of a doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. MT on Friday.
