MEMPHIS, Tenn.Stacie Townsend held Memphis to two hits and one unearned run, as the UTEP softball team defeated the Tigers, 3-1, at the Tiger Softball Complex on Sunday to capture the final game of the three-game road series.


The Miners (21-10, 4-2) connected for seven hits on the day, scoring two runs in the second and one in the sixth to keep Memphis from the three-game sweep.


Townsend fanned nine batters and gave up four walks to capture her 17th victory of the season. The senior from Orlando, Fla. collected her 200th strikeout for 2010 when she put away Kailey Kassner in the bottom of the seventh. Townsend has recorded 670 K’s for her career.


Camilla Carrera was 2-for-4 from the plate and was responsible for two of the Miners’ three runs, scoring once and driving in another.


Ashley Ellis chipped in with two RBIs to finish 1-for-3 with a double.


Memphis was first on the board with one run in the bottom of the first when Heather Mott drew a lead-off walk from Townsend. Mott stole second and then third and scored off an error by UTEP’s Kayla Oranger for the unearned run. Townsend struck out Vannessa Walle to retire the side.


UTEP scored two runs in the third inning, after Kia Moore drew a one-out walk. Carrera singled and Townsend loaded the bases on a full count walk. Ellis laced the ball into center field, plating Moore and Carrera.


Back-to-back one-out singles opened the sixth frame as Kayleigh Walts and Oranger gave the Miners a pair of singles. Moore struck out swinging. Carrera belted a single into right field, driving in Walts for the Miners’ final run of the day.


UTEP will take a break from league action when it faced I-10 rival New Mexico State on Tuesday, March 23 in a single game at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. First pitch is slated 4 p.m. The Miners resume C-USA in a three-game road series at Houston next weekend.
