March 11, 2014
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UTEP softball team split a pair of games with New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.
The Miners (9-17) won game one, 7-6, but fell to the Lobos (8-16), 9-6.
The Miners took an early 4-0 lead on the Lobos, as Erika Arcuri plated Tahla Wade on a double to left center and Ashley Eldridge brought Arcuri across the dish on a single down the right field line in the first inning.
The Lobos would tie the game 4-4 and again 5-5, the Miners answered.
The Orange and Blue tacked on a run in the fifth inning on an Alanna Leasau double to right center that brought Eldridge home. And with the score tied 5-5, Eldridge and Leasau each recorded an RBI in the sixth to seal the game.
Arcuri went 4-for-5, with two runs scored, while Eldridge, Leasau and Montiel each recorded two hits.
Again, UTEP took another early 4-0 lead, scoring three runs on Lobo miscues in the first inning. Alvillar raced to home plate on a wild pitch, Wade scored on an error and Leasau trotted across the dish on an illegal pitch. Brianna Tourtillott knocked in Eldridge on a single to right field in the third inning.
But the Miners allowed five runs in the fourth inning and four more in the sixth, taking momentum and the win.
Wade went 4-for-5 and Eldridge produced two more hits.
The Miners continue with Conference USA action this weekend (March 15 &16) at La Tech. UTEP dropped two of three to Southern Miss to open league play this past weekend.
