EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP softball team opened up Conference USA play losing to Memphis at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. The Miners (7-10) lost to the Tigers (9-13), 5-1, in game one and, 4-2, in game two.

Game One

Memphis put up four runs in the second inning to control the momentum of the game. Cierra Mangum and Breslin Perry each knocked in runs during the inning.Ellen Roberts went the distance in the circle as she struck out seven Miners.

UTEP got on the board in the fifth when senior Kayleigh Walts knocked in senior Kayla Oranger to home plate. Oranger added another multi-hit game to her career as she finished 2-for-4 on the day.

Game Two

The Miners were down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Colleen Hohman, who started in the circle, knocked in two runs after she doubled to left field. But Memphis answered in the top of the seventh when Morgan Mosby and Laura Curtis each knocked in runs to help their squad post its second conference win.

Hohman threw seven innings and struck out six Tigers. Freshman Kawehiokalani Netane continued her solid hitting as she went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore Ariel Armendariz had another hit early in her UTEP career with a run scored.

The Miners will play host to the Tigers at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
