Miners Split on Day Two of San Diego Classic
March 5, 2010
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UTEP softball team (14-4) bounced back from a 9-1 loss to Cal Poly earlier in the day to defeat Long Beach State, 2-1, in extra frames on Friday at the San Diego Classic.
Stacie Townsend (12-3) went the distance and posted her fifth double-digit strike out performance of the season with 14 K's.
Townsend, who was 0-for-3 at the plate, scored the winning run after she drew a walk from LBSU's Taylor Petty in the top of the eighth inning. She scored off an RBI-single from Ashley Ellis.
LBSU scored its only run in the bottom of the first when Caitrin DeBaun laced a single into right field. A sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring position but two UTEP errors - a passed ball and a throwing error - drove her home.
UTEP tied in the third frame when Carrera came home off a triple by Moore. Ellis' single in the eighth was the Miners' third hit of the game.
The Miners were not as fortunate in the day's opener, falling in five innings to Cal Poly.
The Mustangs scored five runs in the first, one in the second and fifth inning, for the win.
Townsend's home run in the bottom of the first frame was UTEP's only run of the game. Townsend now has seven home runs on the season, giving the Miners a total of 19 this campaign.
UTEP wraps up tournament play tomorrow when they face no. 5 UCLA and no. 21 Fresno State.
They head to Austin, Texas on Wednesday to play 15th-ranked Texas and open conference play at home in a Saturday doubleheader.
