UTEP Softball Comes Up Short
Feb. 24, 2013
EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP softball team fell to South Dakota, 5-3, on a windy day at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex Sunday afternoon.
Junior Alanna Leasau hit her third home run of the season to right-center in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at one, but the Miners (6-8) could not overcome the Coyotes (7-7) offense as they had 13 hits on the day.
Morgan Hancock hit a two-run home run to center that put her team in the lead for good. Senior Kayleigh Walts answered with her second home run in as many days to bring the Orange and Blue within one run. South Dakota scored two more runs in the top of the fifth to keep momentum.
The Miners will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Belmont (6-6) in a doubleheader Thursday, Feb. 28. The team will remain in Nashville to play in the Purple and Gold Challenge March 1 and 2.
The Miners announced that Ariel Armendariz made the squad after she tried out last month, mostly playing catcher. The lefty officially suited up with the team during Saturday's games. The native of El Paso saw some action when she came in to pinch hit and hit a single that brought in a run Sunday.
