The UTEP softball team fell to 4-5 in the season with a 6-3 loss to Houston Baptist to close out the three-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Complex.
The Huskies got on the board first in the opening inning on a two RBI home run to right field off of Callie Herrington’s bat. Freshman pitcher Laura Ramos allowed a single before retiring the next two batters to end the inning.
Houston Baptist extended the lead scoring two more runs off three hits in the bottom of the second. The Huskies added a pair of runs in the third and sixth innings making the score 6-1 as the Miners went to bat in the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs on the board and freshman pinch hitter Kayla Black on first, senior outfielder Kia Moore hit a long ball to right field. The two RBI homerun put the Miners within two runs. Senior pitcher Courtney Auger took the circle for the Miners. After walking the first batter and allowing a double, Auger shut out the next three Husky batters to end the top of the seventh.
The Miners began the seventh with Camilla Carrera reaching first on a controversial error on the Huskies’ shortstop. Camille Herrera’s base hit with just one out gave UTEP momentum as freshman Samantha Alvillar approached the plate. The Miners’ rally ended when Alvillar put the ball into double play and ending the game giving the Huskies a 6-3 win.
Next up for the Miners is the UTEP Invitational where they will host Bradley, Texas State, North Dakota and NM State beginning on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Helen of Troy Complex.
