Hammond. La. – The UTEP Softball team won in two different ways on the first day in the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II at North Oak Park Friday. The Miners (4-4) jumped all over South Dakota State (2-5), 13-5, and then came from behind to beat tournament host Southeastern Louisiana (5-2), 4-3.

Game 1

Junior Colleen Hohman (2-2) won her second game of the season, while the Miners’ offense came to life on the Jackrabbits pitching. The Orange and Blue jacked three home runs and amassed a season-high in hits (16).

Hohman pitched five innings and struck out five batters, but it was her offensive numbers that shined Friday afternoon. She slammed a three-run home run to left field in the top of the second inning and drove in another run on a sac-fly to center giving the Miners a commanding 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The hit parade continued when junior Alanna Leasau hit her first home run as a Miner when she nailed a grand slam to right field in the top seventh. Senior Kayla Oranger had her breakout game of the young season going 4-for-4 and stealing two bases.

The Miners not only hit the ball well, but advanced runners with five stolen bases on the day. They now have 10 stolen bases on the season after stealing 16 all last year.

Game 2

The Miners were down 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning.

The inning started when junior Kayla Black reached base on a fielding error, then freshman Kawehiokalani Netane singled to center field, putting Black in scoring position and she did just that. Freshman Danielle Pearson came up to bat the hit a single to left center brining Black to home plate.

UTEP capitalized on the Lions’ five errors. Oranger got on base on one of those errors setting the stage for junior Erika Arcuri. The transfer from Florida International hit a two-run single to left center giving her new squad the lead for good.

Pearson (2-1) earned her second win with her first complete game. The native of Orlando, Fla. started slow, but only allowed six hits and struck out four batters.

The Miners will play Louisiana State-Alexandria (4-1) at 9 a.m. MT and Texas Southern (3-0) at 11:30 a.m. MT.
