UTEP Softball Rallies to Beat UC Riverside, 5-3
Feb. 10, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. – The Miners found themselves down, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the fifth inning on the final day of the Fresno State Kick-Off. But senior Ashley Collazo came up with a clutch hit Sunday afternoon.
Collazo hit a two-out single to left field that brought senior Kayla Oranger and sophomore McKenzey Finley home to tie the ball game. The Miners (2-3) would score two more runs the following inning to clinch the win. Freshman Danielle Pearson’s ground out to the shortstop scored freshman Kawehiokalani Netane and then junior Kayla Black would score the final run on an error later in the inning to seal the deal.
Pearson won her first-career game with the Orange and Blue, but the combination of Pearson, freshman Jade Rodriguez and junior Colleen Hohman combined for seven strong innings and four strikeouts to contain the Highlanders.
The Miners will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on I-10 rival New Mexico State in Las Cruces (5:30 p.m. MT).
