UTEP Softball Falls to West Coast Teams at Fresno State Kick-Off
Feb. 8, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. - The UTEP Softball team dropped its first two games of the 2013 season in the Fresno State Kick-Off at Bulldog Diamond. The Miners lost a tough, opening game to Sacramento State, 3-2, and then were beat up by Fresno State, 10-2, in game two.
The Miners found themselves down three runs to the Hornets before junior transfer Alanna Leasau hit a two-run single in the fifth inning, bringing fellow transfer Erika Arcuri and freshman Danielle Pearson to home plate, to cut the deficit one run.
"We played a nice, solid game but the bats didn't come to life quick enough," co-head coach James Rodriguez said. "Overall a good first game effort."
UTEP made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kayla Oranger advanced to second when Arcuri singled with no outs, but were never able to advance after Sacramento State pitcher Caitlin Brooks struck out two hitters and forced a fly out to right field to end the game.
Fresno State scored eight runs in the bottom half of first inning and never looked back.
"We had defensive lapses in the first inning that gave Fresno a lead which we couldn't overcome." co-head coach James Rodriguez said.
Freshman Kawehiokalani Netane got the Miners on the board with a one-run single in the fourth. She was another newcomer to contribute during the doubleheader. Leasau added her third RBI of the day in the fifth inning.
UTEP will face UC Riverside (4:45 p.m. MT) and UC Davis (9:15 p.m. MT) tomorrow evening at Bulldog Diamond. Fans can keep up with the Miners on Gametracker through utepathletics.com.
