UTEP Soccer Places Three On C-USA All-Academic Teams

EL PASO, TEXAS – UTEP Soccer Junior Tess Hall and sophomores Tori Martyn and Azia Nicholson have been voted to the 2011 Conference USA All-Academic second team, the league office announced Thursday. Hall is a kinesiology major with a cumulative GPA of 3.86 while Martyn sports a 4.0 in kinesiology and Nicholson has registered a 4.0 while pursuing a degree in biology.  

“Making the All-Academic team is a tremendous honor, and it really reflects the outstanding character of Azia, Tess and Tori,” UTEP soccer head coach Kevin Cross said. “I appreciate all three of them representing UTEP soccer so well.”

Nicholson, who was a recipient of a C-USA Academic Medal (min. GPA 3.75) for the 2010-11 year, has also excelled on the pitch in 2011. She was tabbed as a second-team All C-USA performer and was a key cog for the Orange and Blue during the regular season.  She tied for fifth on the squad in goals (four) and assists (three). During league action she was particularly strong, scoring three times.

Hall also earned a C-USA Academic Medal in 2010-11 while securing a position on All C-USA third team for her play in 2011. She was second on the team in goals (six) and points (19) while rating tied for third in assists (four) despite missing six matches. The Miners are 9-3-3 on the year when she plays, and 2-4-0 without her.

Martyn, who is considered to the best ball winner on the team, has impressed in the classroom too. She garnered a C-USA Academic Medal in 2010-11, and has been an important contributor in 2011. Martyn contributed four assists during the regular season while starting every match she appeared in.



Hall, Martyn and Nicholson will return to action with the rest of the Miners when they face off against Rice in the semifinals of the 2011 C-USA Tournament at 4 p.m. MT Friday.
