Miners Cruise To 3-0 Win Over Tulsa In Home Finale

UTEP rebounded from its first loss of the season with a commanding 3-0 win over Tulsa in the home finale at University Field on Sunday.

The Miners improve to 15-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Conference USA action, while Tulsa moves to 7-7-2 and 2-3-0. The win was also UTEP's 100th in program history. The Miners are now 100-76-11 in their tenth season of intercollegate competition.

UTEP got a goal from sophomore Cara Nordin and a pair of scores from sophomore Jami Tullius as the Miner defense recorded its seventh shutout of the season and third in its last four games.

“I thought we played the second half like the last ten minutes of the first half,” UTEP coach Kevin Cross said. “I felt like we attacked for 60 of the 90 minutes.”

Nordin netted her seventh goal this year at the 36:25 mark to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Angie Kleinfelder crossed the ball into the box where TU goalie Meredith Hart deflected the ball but right to Nordin who recorded her third game-winner of the season.

UTEP held a 1-0 lead at the intermission despite being out-shot 11-7. The Golden Hurricane also took four corner kicks to on for the Miners.

The Miners turned up the offensive intensity in the second half as they played the majority of the period in the TU half of the field.

Tullius’ first goal came in the 51st minute when she dribbled around a defender and sent a blast from 16 yards just inside the right corner of the penalty area that got past Hart in the left half of the goal.

The score came two minutes after an apparent Brandi Aston goal on a pass from Nordin that was called off due to an offsides violation.

Tullius scored her team-leading 13th goal of the year late in the 77th minute when she took possession of a loose ball, dribbled around two TU defenders and sent a hard shot from 16 yards over Hart and into the goal. The goal moved her into third place on the UTEP single-season list.

The UTEP defense put the clamps down in the second half, limiting TU to just four shots all of which came in the final 9:27. The Golden Hurricane’s best scoring chance came with 96 seconds remaining on a Jamie German cross that Ashley Rickner received and one-timed a 10-yard attempt, only to see it sail over the goal.

Brittany Popoff finished with two saves as she tallied her fifth solo shutout this year. For TU, Hart had seven saves, including five in the second half.

UTEP will play its final three regular-season contests on the road, beginning with Houston on Friday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. Mountain Time. The Miners will face Rice two days later at Noon MT before concluding the season against Tulane in College Station, Texas, on Oct. 29.
