Senior Night Highlights Final Home Soccer Weekend
UTEP will look to close out just the second perfect home slate in school history this weekend as it hosts SMU and Tulsa on Friday and Sunday at University Field.
The games will also be the final home contests for UTEP’s three seniors, Heather Boakye, Kaletia Roberts and Kia Sams. The trio enters the weekend as the winningest four-year class in school history at 54-16-2. They are also the first class in school history to be a part of four winning seasons.
Boakye has appeared in 57 career games as a defender and made her third and fourth career starts last weekend against Southern Miss and UCF. Roberts is a three-time All-Conference and Academic All-Conference performer who has 30 career points on eight goals and 14 assists. Sams ranks second in UTEP history with 21 career assists, while her 49 points are tied for sixth all-time.
If the group wants to go out on a winning note, they will have to do it against UTEP’s longest rivals. SMU and Tulsa are the only two schools that have appeared on the Miners’ schedule all ten years of the program’s history.
SMU leads the series with UTEP, 10-1, but the Miners got their first win last year with a 3-2 overtime win in El Paso. The Golden Hurricane hold a 5-3-1 edge over the Miners following last year’s 3-0 upset in Tulsa.
SMU, who is currently 8-4-1 overall and 2-1 in C-USA action, comes to the Sun City after being upended by Rice, 2-1, in Dallas on Sunday. Sophomore Kimber Bailey leads the offensive attack with 12 goals and has taken 56 shots this year accounting for 30.4 percent of the Mustangs’ shots.
The Mustangs will be making their first road trip in a month and will bring a physical style of play with them. Through two weeks of conference action, coach John Cossaboon’s squad is averaging a league-high 15.7 fouls per game. The Miners are fifth at 13.8 infractions per game.
Tulsa enters with a 6-6-2 record and a 1-2 mark in conference play along with three solid point producers. Senior Carrie Schnarre, junior Katie Ward and freshman Jennifer Kacergis all have at least six goals and three assists while combining for 20 of the team’s 24 goals and 15 of their 22 assists.
On defense, sophomore Meredith Hart has a 1.48 goals-against average and a league-best five shutouts.
Friday’s game against the Mustangs will begin at 7 p.m. Mountain Time and Sunday’s tilt with the Golden Hurricane is set for a Noon kickoff. Tickets are $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for youth and UTEP students are free with a valid ID.
