Miners Return Home For Start Of Five-Game Stretch In Sun City

Following a grueling three-week, six-game road swing, the UTEP soccer team returns home this weekend for the start of a five-match stretch in the Sun City. Up first is a tilt against Houston at 7 p.m. on Friday, before Rice challenges the Miners in the first-ever nationally televised game from El Paso at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Since 2002, the Orange and Blue have been very good when playing in the Sun City. Under the guidance of Head Coach Kevin Cross, they have registered an impressive record of 37-5. Not all of the credit can go to Cross and his troops, though, as the Miners are blessed with a passionate, loud fan base. Those fans will be counted on heavily this weekend.

There are ample reasons to attend the matches against the Cougars and Owls in addition to UTEP’s stellar home record since 2002. El Paso’s own Jami Tullius enters Friday’s game with 31 career goals, which places her tied for first all time in program history with current assistant coach Holly Cohen.

Freshman Anoop Josan has already set the record for assists by a rookie with eight, while as a squad, the Orange and Blue have blanked the opposition eight times this year. The next shutout with establish a school standard. Moreover, the Miners boast the No. 12 scoring offense in the country, at 2.77 goals per contest.

The Miners are undefeated, 4-0-1, in five conference home lid lifters under the tutelage of Cross. They have won the past four contests. Overall, they have out-scored the opposition by a whopping margin of 13-2. Last year, UTEP knocked off USM, 2-0, in its initial Conference USA home opener.

With their next win, the Miners will secure their 10th victory of the campaign. When that happens, it will mark the school-record fifth successive season that the Orange and Blue have won at least 10 contests.

Sunday’s nationally-televised match on CSTV will mark a historic day for UTEP, although making history has come to be expected with Cross at the helm of the program. Since he was named head coach, the Miners have reached unprecedented levels of success.

They have recorded four straight 10-win seasons- the first time in program annals- and are on the cusp of a fifth straight. The Orange and Blue registered a program-best 20 triumphs last year on the way to earning the school’s first-ever berth into the NCAA Championships. Once there, UTEP made plenty of noise by posting a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 overtime win at Texas.
