UTEP Soccer Holds Annual Green Grass Classic
On the cusp of the 2006 season, the UTEP soccer team took a break from its intense training camp for a little fun, holding the 11th-annual Green Grass Classic at University Field on Friday. Each team donned entertaining costumes for the time-tested tradition.
“This has been a program tradition for a long time and it has become more fun each year,” Head Coach Kevin Cross said. “It is a fun team-bonding event.”
Six teams comprised of three players competed in a round-robin tournament, with squads earning three points for a win and one point for a tie.
After several tightly-contested games, the two teams left standing for the championship match were Team Crayon (Ashleigh Decker, Tameka Sumter and Jessica Salvi A> and Team Yeamans (Melissa Abraham, Brandi Aston and Chelsea Winbush). Brittany Popoff coached Team Crayon while Kelli Yeamans A> paced the sidelines for her squad.
Sumter gave the Crayons the early 1-0 lead, but the game was quickly knotted as Abraham, the captain of the unit, buried one for Team Yeamans. The match remained tied as time expired, forcing sudden-victory overtime. Aston put an end to the tournament with the gamewinner in extra time.
“It feels great to win, it was a fun competition,” an elated Abraham said.
Things will be a little more serious on Saturday, as the Miners will take to the pitch for the Alumni Game. The contest is slated to start at 1 p.m. at University Field, and it is open to the public.
