EL PASO, TEXAS - Former UTEP soccer standout Melissa Desilets was one of 12 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award, Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Monday afternoon. This is the third year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
Desilets, who received the Golden Miner Award at this year's "Dinner With the Miners" banquet, rates third in school history for minutes played (6,752), fifth for games started (77) and tied for sixth for games played (82). She concluded her career by playing in every minute of every match for a program-best 35 games (spanning the 2009 & 2010 seasons).
Other accolades for Desilets include being named a recipient of the UTEP Alumni Association Top-10 Senior Award and earning placement on the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® Women's Soccer second team.
The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
