UTEP head soccer coach Kevin Cross announced the 2009 schedule on Thursday, with the earliest start date in program history, 12 home matches and the christening of the I-10 rivalry highlighting the slate.

“Everyone with UTEP soccer is looking forward to the 2009 season,” Cross said. “We have a great schedule with many home games for the best fans in Conference USA to view. The team has high expectations for the 2009 season, and we appreciate El Paso and the institution’s support of UTEP Soccer. There is a lot of parity in Conference USA play, and our fans can make a big difference in our games’ outcomes.”

The Miners, who return 13 players with starting experience from the 13-7-1 2008 team, kick things off by battling New Mexico State at University Field on Aug. 21. The game will be historic in nature, with 2009 marking the first year for Aggie soccer, not to mention the fact that UTEP has never played a game before Aug. 25.

Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech and Utah State will venture to El Paso the weekend of Aug. 28 to help comprise the field for the 12th-annual Miner Classic. The tournament will be the first of two hosted by the Miners in 2009, with the 10th-annual Border Shootout slated for the weekend of Sept. 11. Arkansas State, Sam Houston State and Weber State will travel to the Sun City for the event. Sandwiched in between will be a home game vs. Utah Valley University on Sept. 6.

UTEP will play just a pair of non-conference road games, doing so at Eastern Washington on Sept. 3 and against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Texas State on Sept. 20.

Conference USA action will commence the final weekend of September, and for just the second time in the past six years, UTEP will do so at home. The Miners will take on Tulsa and SMU on Sept. 25 and 27, respectively. A challenging stretch will follow, with the Orange and Blue facing Memphis (Oct. 2), UAB (Oct. 4), UCF (Oct. 9) and Southern Miss (Oct. 11) all in hostile territory.

The Miners will wrap up their home portion of the C-USA schedule with four successive matches. The stretch will include Marshall (Oct. 16), East Carolina (Oct. 18), Houston (Oct. 23) and Rice (Oct. 25). The regular season will come to a close at Colorado College on Oct. 30.

The 2009 C-USA Women’s Soccer Championship will be held from Nov.4-8 on the campus of SMU, where UTEP will be in search of the tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
