BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UTEP soccer team was edged out at UAB, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Tiffini Turpin scored at 33:47 to put the Blazers (5-9-1, 2-4-1 C-USA) on the board, and it proved to be enough as the Miners (10-5-2, 4-3-1 C-USA) could not put it all together.

UTEP registered 11 shots, including seven on target, only to have UAB netminder C.J. Winship post a clean sheet. The Miners also earned five corner kicks. Freshman Sarah Dilling was solid in net for the Orange and Blue, recording five stops while the defense chipped in a team save.

The Miners opened up the match with ample aggression, testing Winship in the opening minute. A good ball found the foot of Mackenzie German who ripped a shot on goal, but the UAB GK was up to the task. Katie Dorman vied to light up the scoreboard three minutes later, but her attempt whistled wide.

The home side’s initial opportunity was courtesy of Emma Smith, whose shot was gobbled up by Dilling at 11:03. Dorman then misfired wide on a shot (16:50) as did Tori Martyn at 19:27. The Blazers went back on the attack, earning a pair of corner kicks. UTEP’s stop troops were well-positioned, clearing away each of the services.

Quality passing led to an open look for Martyn, only to have her shot be saved by Winship at 28:43.The stop loomed larger a few minutes later, with the Blazers staking a 1-0 advantage thanks to the tally from Turpin. Smith set up the sequence, and Dilling couldn’t quite come up with the save.

The Miners regrouped after the strike, earning a corner kick in the 38th minute. They couldn’t convert, though, but kept the ball deep in UAB territory. Dorman ripped a shot, which was corralled by Winship at 38:30. UAB mustered a corner kick late in the stanza but UTEP’s defense was locked in.

UAB looked to extend its advantage in the early stages of the second stanza, but UTEP would not have it. The Miners came up with a team save at 52:34 and then Dilling denied Pascale Pinard’s rebound 14 seconds later. Dilling was called upon again two minutes later, delivering a save on a shot from Allison Young.

The Miners nearly found the equalizer in the counter-attack, but German’s shot was tipped out of play by Winship. A quality ball was served into the area on the ensuing corner kick but the Orange and Blue couldn’t redirect a shot on goal.

Diling kept the Orange and Blue in striking distance with another save, this on an attempt by Mary Catherin Combs at 65:34.

A nice outlet led to a good rush for the Miners, with Dorman looking to light up the scoreboard. Once again, though, Winship managed to make the save. Six minutes later Dorman took another shot only to have it creep over the crossbar.

UTEP generated another corner kick in the 83rd minute. A well-placed ball found the foot of Amanda Pak, who rifled a shot. Winship was well positioned, however, coming up with a save. The Miners continued to fight down the stretch but the rally did not come to fruition.
