The Winning Ways Of UTEP Soccer

Great Support Once Again
For the fourth straight year, the UTEP soccer team led Conference USA in attendance. The Miners topped the league in home average (642) and overall home fans (7,703), both of which set program records. Since the start of 2006, more than 26,000 fans have passed through the gates at picturesque University Field. UTEP has rewarded the home faithful by posting a mark of 38-5-3 in the Sun City during that timeframe.

League Honors Pour In
The UTEP soccer team had a great year across the board, but it was the play of four Miners in particular which garnered attention recently. Skye Schultz was tabbed as the 2009 Conference USA Freshman of the year while seniors Tameka Sumter and Chelsea Winbush (first-team All C-USA) and senior Jo Radcliffe (third-team All C-USA) also were recognized in the annual awards.
Sumter became just the third Miner to garner multiple first-team all-conference recognition, joining former greats Ja'net Esparza and Kim Rogers. Winbush has now reaped a pair of all-league honors (2008 second-team recipient) while Schultz stands alongside Esparza as the only players in program history to take home freshman of the year awards. The honor for Radcliffe is the first of her career.

Academic Success Too
While on the pitch success garners plenty of attention, the Miner program once again excelled away from the field in 2009. Melissa Desilets and Chelsea Winbush were tabbed to the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) ESPN the Magazine All-District VI teams. Additionally, Desilets and Winbush were both voted onto to the Conference USA Academic-All Conference squads.
Desilets, who boasts a 4.00 cumulative GPA in chemistry, was a first-team selection was eligible to earn NCAA Academic All-America honors for women's soccer later this year. Winbush, who has a 3.41 GPA in English and American literature was voted onto the third team.

Regional Rankings And RPI Talk
With the way the UTEP soccer team played in 2009, it was of no surprise that the rest of the country took notice. For the sixth straight season the Miners broke into the top 10 of the very competitive NCAA Central Region rankings. UTEP also was a top-75 program in terms of RPI for most of the year, elevating as high as 52nd (out of 322 teams nationally).

U-20 Canadian National Team Trains At UTEP
The U-20 Canadian National Team held a training camp at UTEP from Oct. 26-31. The training site was a natural fit for the team, given the multitude of connections there are between Canada and UTEP soccer. Miner assistant coach Kelly Parker is a member of the Canadian National Team while junior Anoop Josan started for Canada at the U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup last year. The 2009 squad featured four natives of Canada, in the form of starters Josan, Melissa Desilets, Chandra Morden and reserve freshman Brittany Kindzierski. Team Canada used the Miners' facilities and trained at University Field throughout the week, while also venturing to Mexico for a pair of matches.

Fun On The Road
The UTEP soccer team means business when it plays on the road-evidenced by the 2009 team equaling the best start in program history in hostile territory (3-0) but head coach Kevin Cross ensures that the team has some great experiences off the pitch when it travels. On one of its trips this year, the Miners toured famed Graceland, including the site of Elvis Presley's home. At the airport before the team flew back to El Paso, UTEP soccer got a chance to meet famous R&B singer and songwriter Ne-Yo.
