Strong Senior Class Ready To Guide Team In 2009
While over the years the faces change and players come and go, the UTEP soccer program has been consistent with its winning ways on the pitch. Head coach Kevin Cross' charges have posted a program-best seven straight winning seasons, with the effort helping UTEP rate tied for 14th nationally for triumphs in the timeframe.
A big part of the Miners' success under Cross can be attributed to the respective senior leadership each year, and in 2009 the Orange and Blue will feature a gifted senior class.
Tameka Sumter, Neresa Taylor and Chelsea Winbush have been standouts for UTEP since venturing to El Paso out of high school in 2006 while Brittany Gonzalez and Jo Radcliffe have starred since joining the programs from the community-college ranks.
The past three years, the Orange and Blue boast a record of 41-20-3 and have out-scored the opposition to the tune of 142-73. The 41 wins already rate as the sixth best by a senior class at UTEP.

Training Camp Just Around The Corner
While it may be hard to believe, UTEP soccer season will be here soon.
The Miners are slated to open training camp for their 2009 campaign on August 5, and it is shaping up to be an exciting season. UTEP returns 13 players from last year's 13-7-1 team with starting experience (14 letterwinners overall) while also adding five gifted newcomers. While the talent is in place, the players and coaching staff understand the importance of the work put in during the two-plus weeks of training prior to kicking off the season against I-10 rival New Mexico State on Aug. 21.
The game will be historic in nature, with 2009 marking the first year for Aggie soccer, not to mention the fact that UTEP has never played a game before Aug. 25.
While there will certainly be high-intensity practices and workouts during that timeframe, head coach Kevin Cross and his staff will also ensure there are a good amount of team-bonding activities. Among those events will once again be the Green Grass Classic, which is an annual event where players don costumes and compete in a round-robin tournament of 3 vs. 3 games.
Training camp will continue right up until the Miners open the year vs. NMSU at University Field.

UTEP head soccer coach Kevin Cross announced the 2009 schedule recently, with the earliest start date in program history, 12 home matches and the christening of the I-10 rivalry highlighting the slate.
"Everyone with UTEP soccer is looking forward to the 2009 season," Cross said. "We have a great schedule with many home games for the best fans in Conference USA to view. The team has high expectations for the 2009 season, and we appreciate El Paso and the university's support of UTEP Soccer. There is a lot of parity in Conference USA, and our fans can make a big difference in our games' outcomes."
The Miners kick things off by battling New Mexico State at University Field on Aug. 21.
Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech and Utah State will venture to El Paso the weekend of Aug. 28 to help comprise the field for the 12th-annual Miner Classic. The tournament will be the first of two hosted by the Miners in 2009, with the 10th-annual Border Shootout slated for the weekend of Sept. 11. Arkansas State, Sam Houston State and Weber State will travel to the Sun City for the event. Sandwiched in between will be a home game vs. Utah Valley University (Sept. 6).
UTEP will play just a pair of non-conference road games, doing so at Eastern Washington on Sept. 3 and against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Texas State on Sept. 20.
Conference USA action will commence the final weekend of September, and for just the second time in the past six years, UTEP will do so at home. The Miners will take on Tulsa and SMU on Sept. 25 and 27, respectively. A challenging stretch will follow, with the Orange and Blue facing Memphis (Oct. 2), UAB (Oct. 4), UCF (Oct. 9) and Southern Miss (Oct. 11) all in hostile territory.
The Miners will wrap up their home portion of the C-USA schedule with four successive matches. The stretch will include Marshall (Oct. 16), East Carolina (Oct. 18), Houston (Oct. 23) and Rice (Oct. 25). The regular season will come to a close at Colorado College on Oct. 30.
The 2009 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship will be held from Nov. 5-8 on the campus of SMU, where UTEP will be in search of the tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Buy A Goal Fundraiser Underway
Buy A Goal Donor Sheet in PDF Format
The "Buy a Goal" Fundraiser is designed to help us fundraise for needed equipment and team activities. Last year the UTEP fundraising efforts rose over $5,000.00. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000.00. With your help, we can continue to provide the equipment and experiences for our very deserving student-athletes and compete with the nation's elite!
How does it work?: Throughout the season, the UTEP Miners will be scoring goals to win games this year. Sponsors, like yourself, will either sponsor a flat donation or a cash amount for every goal scored throughout the season that the UTEP Miners score. When the season is over, the goals will be tallied and your donation will be equal to the amount of goals times your cash amount donated per goal.
For example: If UTEP Soccer scores 30 goals this season and you sponsor a $1.00 per goal, you will donate $30.00 to the UTEP Miners' Soccer Gift Fund.
Your pledge will be the amount you check below times the number of goals that UTEP Soccer scores. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY NOW!!! After the season, we will let you know the results of our efforts and the amount of your pledge. At the time we receive your donation, your gifts will be sent out to you!
