Season Opener Vs. NMSU Rapidly Approaching

The UTEP soccer team's season opener against I-10 rival New Mexico State is just around the corner, as the Miners will welcome the Aggies to El Paso for a 7 p.m. kick-off at picturesque University Field on Friday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m.

The contest will be historic in nature, as it marks the earliest start date ever for Miner soccer (prior standard was Aug. 22). Additionally, it will be the first match ever for the Aggies, whose program was created this year

Tickets are expected to be at a premium for the 500-seat capacity venue, so Miner fans are encouraged to come early.

The game will also be the first of 12 home tilts for the Orange and Blue this year. The Miners will play host to a pair of annual tournaments (Miners' Classic & Border Shootout), in addition to squaring off vs. six C-USA foes

UTEP will be looking to continue its dominance at the facility, where it boasts a mark of 61-7-3 since 2002. Playing a large role in the record has been the support of El Pasoans, who have flocked to the field in large numbers. UTEP has paced Conference USA in attendance for three straight years.

Training Camp Opens With Intense Scrimmage

The UTEP soccer team capped its first day of 2009 training camp by playing to a 1-1 tie in the annual Orange vs. White scrimmage at University Field Wednesday evening.

"I thought the intensity was strong," head coach Kevin Cross said. "You can tell that the players have worked very hard over the summer."

The White team, comprised of Miner returnees, jumped out to the early lead courtesy of Chelsea Winbush's strike at the 20-minute mark of the opening period. A bouncing ball loose in the box went to the senior, who drilled it over the outstretched fingertips of goalkeeper Chandra Morden. Team Orange, made up of underclassmen, vied for the equalizer in the waning minute of the half but netminder Sara Kaltwasser turned away a point-blank blast with a sliding effort.

The intense play continued into the second half, with both squads generating quality chances. Neither could muster a tally early on, though, with Kaltwasser and Morden both coming up with stops.

The Orange continued to fight, however, and the effort paid off in the form of the equalizer with only 10 minutes to play. A battle in the box led to a clean look for Katie Dorman, and the sophomore native of El Paso drilled it home.

The Miners will continue their training camp over the next two-plus weeks, in preparation for the Aug. 21 home opener against New Mexico State at 7 p.m.

2009 Schedule Released

Click Here To View The Complete 2009 Schedule

UTEP head soccer coach Kevin Cross announced the 2009 schedule recently, with the earliest start date in program history, 12 home matches and the christening of the I-10 rivalry highlighting the slate.

"Everyone with UTEP soccer is looking forward to the 2009 season," Cross said. "We have a great schedule with many home games for the best fans in Conference USA to view. The team has high expectations for the 2009 season, and we appreciate El Paso and the university's support of UTEP Soccer. There is a lot of parity in Conference USA, and our fans can make a big difference in our games' outcomes."

The Miners kick things off by battling New Mexico State at University Field on Aug. 21.

Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech and Utah State will venture to El Paso the weekend of Aug. 28 to help comprise the field for the 12th-annual Miner Classic. The tournament will be the first of two hosted by the Miners in 2009, with the 10th-annual Border Shootout slated for the weekend of Sept. 11. Arkansas State, Sam Houston State and Weber State will travel to the Sun City for the event. Sandwiched in between will be a home game vs. Utah Valley University (Sept. 6).

UTEP will play just a pair of non-conference road games, doing so at Eastern Washington on Sept. 3 and against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Texas State on Sept. 20.

Conference USA action will commence the final weekend of September, and for just the second time in the past six years, UTEP will do so at home. The Miners will take on Tulsa and SMU on Sept. 25 and 27, respectively. A challenging stretch will follow, with the Orange and Blue facing Memphis (Oct. 2), UAB (Oct. 4), UCF (Oct. 9) and Southern Miss (Oct. 11) all in hostile territory.

The Miners will wrap up their home portion of the C-USA schedule with four successive matches. The stretch will include Marshall (Oct. 16), East Carolina (Oct. 18), Houston (Oct. 23) and Rice (Oct. 25). The regular season will come to a close at Colorado College on Oct. 30.

The 2009 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship will be held from Nov. 5-8 on the campus of SMU, where UTEP will be in search of the tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Buy A Goal Fundraiser Underway

Buy A Goal Donor Sheet in PDF Format

The "Buy a Goal" Fundraiser is designed to help us fundraise for needed equipment and team activities. Last year the UTEP fundraising efforts rose over $5,000.00. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000.00. With your help, we can continue to provide the equipment and experiences for our very deserving student-athletes and compete with the nation's elite!

How does it work?: Throughout the season, the UTEP Miners will be scoring goals to win games this year. Sponsors, like yourself, will either sponsor a flat donation or a cash amount for every goal scored throughout the season that the UTEP Miners score. When the season is over, the goals will be tallied and your donation will be equal to the amount of goals times your cash amount donated per goal.

For example: If UTEP Soccer scores 30 goals this season and you sponsor a $1.00 per goal, you will donate $30.00 to the UTEP Miners' Soccer Gift Fund.

Your pledge will be the amount you check below times the number of goals that UTEP Soccer scores. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY NOW!!! After the season, we will let you know the results of our efforts and the amount of your pledge. At the time we receive your donation, your gifts will be sent out to you!
