#20 UTEP Rifle To Challenge #11 Air Force & #13 Nevada In Home Opener
Oct. 26, 2012
EL PASO, Texas - The 20th-ranked UTEP rifle team will fire at home for the first time this season in a triangular match against #11 Air Force and # 13 Nevada at its range Saturday.
It will be the third contest in as many weeks for the Miners, who will be striving to continue to progress in their development. Once again UTEP will have only four shooters at its disposal, the minimum amount, leaving it with little cushion for misfires against the Falcons and Wolfpack.
Sophomore Jennifer Armendariz will lead the way in the smallbore. She has paced the squad with an average of 571.5 through two matches, aided by a season-best 575 at #2 TCU Oct. 20. Junior Korina Rodriguez has accounted for 569, helped through her readout of 572 in the lidlifter vs. Jacksonville State and Nevada on Oct. 13.
Hannah Muegge is at 564.5 in the discipline, and is coming off an effort of 568 at TCU. Junior walk-on Areli Oros, who is still relatively new to smallbore, has fired an average of 520.5. She tallied her second-best score in the event (529) in the initial match of the year.
Armendariz has been locked in the air rifle, with back-to-back efforts of at least 588. She posted a career-high-tying while also matching the eighth-best score in school history (592) at TCU. Muegge has been a steadying presence in the event, with respective scores of 571 and 572.
Rodriguez has also been on top of her game, evidenced by a 572.5 average. Assisting in that figure was a 575 in the first match of the year. Oros is at 535 on average, helped with a 538 at TCU.
