UTEP Rifle Defeats Air Force

El Paso, Texas - The UTEP Rifle team picked up their first victory of the 2011 campaign in a win over Air Force at home. The Miners beat the Falcons with a final score of 4651-4570. The Miners final aggregate ranks second in the school record books (4657, vs. Air Force and Alaska; Jan. 11, 2004).

UTEP took the top five spots in smallbore. Sophomore Andrea Vautrin led all shooters firing 583. Jennifer Armendariz finished second (579), followed by Alix Moncada (578), Andrea Palafox (577) and Korina Rodriguez (572). Amanda McMullin and Hannah Muegge rounded out the Miners shootin in smallbore shooting 565 and 561 respectively.

Vautrin also led all Miners in air rifle finishing second with a 587. Palafox, Moncada and Armendariz each fired a 584. Rodriguez and McMullin both shot 579. Atenas Bojorquez saw action in air rifle firing a 577. Muegge shot a 575 and Areli Oros finished the day shooting 550.

“Anytime we shoot well, it’s time celebrate how hard we worked to get here,” said head coach George Brenzovich. “This team is one of the best teams we’ve fielded here since I’ve been here. We still need to make adjustments. Every day will be another step to getting us farther and better in competition.”

The Miners will travel to Jacksonville, Ala. two weeks from now to face Jacksonville State on Saturday, Oct. 22.
