Oct. 27, 2012
EL PASO, Texas - The 20th-ranked UTEP rifle team set a season-high in aggregate score (4498) in a home triangular match against #11 Air Force and #13 Nevada Saturday afternoon. The Wolf Pack finished at 4617 while the Falcons compiled a tally of 4600.
The Miners were sharp throughout, particularly in the air rifle where they recorded their top score in the event (2288) this year.
Jennifer Armendariz put another impressive smallbore performance in the books by producing a score of 571. It is the second straight match that she has surpassed 570. She enjoyed a six-match streak midway through the 2011-12 season, which serves as her career long.
After the reprieve, the sophomore turned her attention to the air rifle. She was practically perfect, tallying a score of 591. The accurate shooting propelled her to a second consecutive score of at least 590. She also achieved that feat early on last year.
Armendariz finished at 1162, which is the second straight match of +1160. Her career long for that is four matches in a row, achieved early on last year.
Hannah Muegge got off to a good start in the air rifle by posting a season high and the fifth-best score of her career at 581. She built on that by registering a readout of 564 in the smallbore, her second-top score in the discipline on the campaign.
Overall the senior registered an aggregate campaign-high 1145. The effort also ties her fifth-best overall result during her career.
Korina Rodriguez got off to a solid start with a sum of 565 in the smallbore, extending her streak to four straight matches of +565. That matches her longest such stretch as a member of the Miners.
She was even better in the air rifle, with a season-best 577. The strong showing also pushed her surge of consecutive matches with 570 or better in the discipline to 19. Furthermore, the El Paso native has been 570+ in 23 of her 24 career appearances in the event.
Rodriguez's aggregate score of 1142 is eight better than last week's sum at TCU.
Junior walk-on Areli Oros initiated action in the smallbore, chipping in a score of 510. That figure is just two shy of her effort last week at TCU on Oct. 20. She then took aim in the air rifle, establishing a campaign-best score (539) in the process. That figure also is fourth all time for her in the event.
Oros concluded the match with an aggregate of 1149, only one point off last week's effort.
The Miners will continue their campaign when they help comprise a triangular match in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Nov. 3. Joining them will be host & #6 Alaska-Fairbanks and top-ranked West Virginia.
