UTEP Rifle Sets Season High Against #10 Air Force
Oct. 20, 2013
EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP rifle team took another step in the right direction by firing a season-high aggregate in an eventual 4656-4543 setback to No. 10 Air Force at the Miners’ Rifle Range Sunday.
The Miners have increased their team score every match this year, which can be attributed to hard work on the range and quality instruction from head coach George Brenzovich. The Miners, who are only going to get better as the season progresses, have already surpassed the top team sum from the entire 2012-13 campaign.
Korina Rodriguez led the way for the Orange and Blue by firing better than 580 in both the smallbore (583) and air rifle (581) for the first time of her career on the way to finishing with a personal-best aggregate of 1164. Her effort in the smallbore was especially impressive, shattering her prior high (572) in the discipline.
Freshman Rachael Schoenrock continued to impress by finishing at 1143 (558-583) while fellow classmate Jessica Kinder also did well on the day (558-562). Schoenrock’s effort in the air rifle served as a career best and also the highest score in the event for any Miner in the discipline this year.
Freshman Jessica Rodriguez posted her best aggregate to date (1110), using a 543 in the smallbore and a 567 in the air rifle to achieve the feat. Fellow classmate Jasmine Juarez also eclipsed 1100 with a score of 1104. She checked in at 536 in smallbore while providing the team’s third-highest score in the air rifle on the day at 568.
Areli Oros, who is back in action after an injury, relied upon a season-high 547 in the air rifle and a 496 in the smallbore to finish at 1043. Monthserrat Serna also was in action, competing only in the air rifle. She wrapped up the event with a score of 540, which is just one shy of her personal best.
