UTEP Rifle Shows Improvement Against #10 Air Force
Oct. 19, 2013
EL PASO, Texas - Every shooter made improvements across the board during an impressive showing for the UTEP rifle team in a 4652-4536 setback to visiting No. 10 Air Force at the Miners' Rifle Range Saturday. It marks the best aggregate score for the Miners since the 2011-12 season, a tremendous sign given the youth of the squad.
The effort easily surpasses the Orange and Blue's tally (4465) from the season-opening match against Nevada on Oct. 12.
Korina Rodriguez set the tone by posting the Miners' best scores in both the smallbore (567) and air rifle (583) for an aggregate of 1150. Her air rifle score ties as the fifth highest of her career.
Checking in close behind were freshmen Rachael Schohoenrock (561-580-1141) and Jessica Kinder (564-573-1137). Schohoenrock's score in the air rifle (580) tops her total of 574 against the Wolf Pack on Oct. 12. Kinder also made strides with her air rifle score jumping up 33 points (540 to 573).
Freshman Jasmine Juarez's hard work on the range this past week paid off, evidenced by her scores improving in both disciplines. She fired a 539 in the smallbore (523 Oct. 12) & a 569 in the air rifle (558 Oct. 12) to finish with a total of 1108 (1081 Oct. 12).
Jessica Rodriguez also surpassed 1100 in her aggregate (1105). She registered a 540 in the smallbore while compiling a personal-best sum of 565 in the air rifle.
Areli Oros made her 2013-14 debut by firing an aggregate of 1062 (517-545), the second-best score of her career. It trailed only the score of 1088 at the 2013 NCAA Qualifying event.
Monthserrat Serna was in action as well in the air rifle. She finished with a sum of 536, just four shy of her effort last week.
The Miners and the Falcons will face off again on Sunday. There is free admission to the match.
