UTEP Shooters Open Season With Loss to Alaska-Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The UTEP rifle team opened its 2008-09 campaign, falling to the defending NCAA champions, Alaska -Fairbanks, 4660-4597 on Friday.

"We are showing great improvement with our young girls," head coach George Brenzovich said. "Our aggregate was higher today than any other score we had last season."

The Miners's highest finish last season came at Nevada, ending with a combined 4590.

Amber Criss was the Miners' top shooter in air rifle firing a team-high 589. She also had the highest aggregate score of 1161.

Andrea Palafox registered 583 in air gun and Jose Burzynski and Morgan Glenn finished with scores of 578 and 576, respectively.

Burzynski was UTEP's top shooter in smallbore, recording a score of 574. Criss was close behind shooting 572 and was followed by Palafox (568) and Glenn (557).

The Miners will face the Alaska-Fairbanks again Saturday, wrapping up a two-day slate.
