UTEP Comeback Falls Short At North Texas, 60-58

DENTON, Texas Whitney Thornton’s jumper as time expired rimmed out and UTEP fell 60-58 to North Texas at the Super Pit Sunday afternoon.

Thronton led UTEP (3-4) with 16 points off the bench while Ana Valtierra had 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Tay Hester added eight points and 10 rebounds with both being career-highs.

The loss was the Miners’ third in their last four games.

North Texas (7-1) won for the fifth consecutive time as Amber Jackson had 12 points to lead the Mean Green. Talicia Sanders added 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

UNT controlled the boards for much of the game and ended with a 45-35 margin. The Miners took control of the game late in the first half when they held a 14-11 edge over the final 11:46 to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room.

The Miners shot 36 percent from the floor but were just 11-for-21 from the free throw line. The Mean Green shot 38 percent overall and 72 percent from the charity stripe.

UTEP committed a season-low 10 turnovers but eight came in the second half.

UTEP will conclude its brief two-game road swing on Tuesday at Northern Colorado. Tip-off at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley, Colo., is set for 7 p.m. Mountain time. The game will be broadcast via the internet at utepathletics.com.
