UTEP Inks Three On First Day Of Spring Signing Period

UTEP women's basketball coach Keitha Green announced that Carly Hawkins, Tay Hester and Whitney Thornton have signed National Letters of Intent to play at UTEP beginning with the 2005-06 academic year.

Hawkins, a 5-7 guard from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, averaged 18.1 points per game and shot over 47 percent from behind the three-point line for Stow-Munroe Falls High School. She helped lead the Bulldogs to a 24-2 record and a berth in the Division I elite eight while being named Player of the Year by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for the Cleveland-Akron-Canton area.

"We're very excited about Carly coming to UTEP," Green said. "She's a very good guard who can play point guard and shooting guard. She's a very good shooter and a good decision maker. She brought great leadership to her high school team and we look forward to her being a Miner."

Hester is a 5-10 guard/forward from Moreno Valley, Calif. who was named first team All-CIF as a junior and senior at Perris High School. She averaged 16.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a senior. She scored 558 points on the year, which included five 20-plus point performances.

"Tay is a very athletic basketball player," Green said. "She has the ability to drive and slash to the basket, which we felt we needed for our team. Her athleticism is much welcomed."

Thornton, a 5-10 guard/forward out of Detroit, Mich., is a junior college transfer who spent the last two seasons at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Ill. Thornton averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore. She earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman after averaging 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds.

"Whitney's a physical and athletic basketball player," Green said. "She has the ability to score both inside and outside, which makes her versatile. I look forward to adding her competitive mentality to our team."
