UTEP Looks To Extend Home Win Streak Friday Against Rice

After spending three of the last four weeks on the road in Conference USA play, the UTEP women’s basketball team will open a four-game homestand on Friday against Rice.

Statistically, UTEP (12-10, 4-6 C-USA) has been a much better team at home this year than on the road. The Miners are averaging 12 points per game more at home and have shot 44 percent from the floor, compared to 38 percent away from the Don Haskins Center.

One of the more important areas of improvement at home has been the Miners’ ability to take care of the ball. In 10 home games, they have a plus-5.1 turnover margin on their opponents. In the 12 contests outside El Paso, they have a minus-1.2 margin.

UTEP has also won five consecutive in El Paso, including wins over Tulsa and SMU the top two teams in the C-USA standings entering the weekend. The Miners have won 15 of their last 22 conference home games.

The Orange and Blue will be facing a Rice (9-12, 5-5) squad that is just 1-9 on the road and has lost all four league games this season.

But it is also a Lady Owl team that defeated the Miners just two weeks ago and leads the all-time series, 18-2. The teams have split the last two games in El Paso, with Rice taking a 10-point victory last February and UTEP winning by 16 in 2004.

Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. and admission is free.
