Phelps Named C-USA Co-Player Of The Week

IRVING, Texas After leading UTEP to a 72-69 come-from-behind win over UAB with 30 points and 19 rebounds, junior forward Charnette Phelps was named the Conference USA women’s basketball Co-Player of the Week by the league office on Monday.

She shares her first-ever weekly honor with Tulsa’s Jillian Robbins.

Phelps’ 30 points are the 12th-highest single-game total in school history, while the 19 boards are the second-most in a game at UTEP. She also drew two charges and assisted on Whitney Thornton’s lay-up with 17 seconds remaining that gave UTEP a 70-67 lead.

It was her second double-double of the season and the tenth of her career.

The Trenton, N.J., native was 4-for-4 on “old-fashioned” three-point plays and scored eight points as a result of four of her nine offensive rebounds.

Phelps now has 590 career points, which ranks 21st all-time at UTEP and 441 career rebounds for 12th-place.

This marks just the sixth time in school history that UTEP has had multiple player of the week award honorees and the first time in three seasons. Junior Ana Valtierra earned the honor two weeks ago.

UTEP (11-7, 3-3 C-USA) will travel to Houston to face Rice (6-11, 2-4) and Houston (7-10, 4-2) next weekend. The games are the first of four-in-a-row on the road for the Miners.
