UTEP Postgame Quotes - vs. Stanford
March 25, 2008
Coach Keitha Adams
(On the season) I'm proud of our players, the seniors are a special group, we have two banners hanging in the Don Haskins Center, we've made history, and we don't have a bad loss. Every loss, and there are four now, are against tournament teams. I told our players that they're always going to be special to me, they'll be with me forever, it's a season I'm going to remember forever. The toughest thing is that the journey is coming to an end.
(On the game) We played some quality basketball for 15 minutes and gave Stanford a test in that first half, and then it slowly got away from us. They played a fantastic ballgame tonight. Probably the only thing that will make me feel better is if they go on to win the national championship, and I told their coach "go win it all". I'd at least like to be able to say that we got beat by the national (champions). I don't like getting beat like that, and it hasn't happened much this year. We came out and have not been scared all year of anything, they're fearless.
(On Stanford's national championship potential) If they play like they did tonight, absolutely.
(On Stanford's offense) They do a good job of reading the defense. We tried to adjust and I think as the game got longer they got better and they got hotter, and it just got tougher as the night grew. I always tell our kids if someone hits a shot and you have a hand in their face, you can sleep at night.
(On Izabela Piekarska) Words can't say enough about the impact that Iza has made, and all of our seniors. I've thought about this group a lot. They're all very special, on and off the court.
(On building for next year) We can definitely build off of it. You can't replace experience. I like our young players.
(On Jareica Hughes) When you've got a great point guard like Jareica, that's the building of something special because she's special. That's a big piece of the puzzle, so it's great that as a sophomore she's gained the experience that she has.
UTEP Guard Natasha Lacy
(On defending Candice Wiggins) We tried to be physical with her but that didn't work because she gets to the free throw line, we tried playing off her but she hits the threes, she goes backdoor. She was just unconscious.
(On offensive struggles) 29% from the field, that's not a winning combination. I give credit where credit is due, Stanford did an excellent job defensively, with their gameplan and executing. We tried to be aggressive and drive to the hole, but you can't score when the ball's not going in the basket.
UTEP Guard Jareica Hughes
(On hunger for further success) We got a little taste of it and we're really proud of one another that we got this far, and we definitely want to go further. That hunger is always going to be there. I'm still hungry.
