UTEP Golfer Patterson Invited to Patriot All-America Tournament
Dec. 22, 2012
UTEP junior golfer Ian Patterson is one of 84 players invited to participate in the Patriot All-America Tournament Dec. 29-31 at The Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Patterson qualified for the prestigious event by being a member of the NJCAA Division II national championship team last year at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix.
"It's an honor to even be considered to play in an event like this," Patterson said. "We are out there supporting soldiers. To be able to both do that and play golf is a win-win. It's a great opportunity, and I hope I represent UTEP Athletics well."
This is the tournament's second year. In early 2010, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) came up with the concept of having a "bowl game" experience for collage all America players.
Folds of Honor will identify a fallen warrior from each invited player's home or school to be honored during the event. The player will carry a golf bag donated by PING embroidered with the warrior's name. The golf bags will be presented to the players by the Event Chairman during the opening ceremonies. At the conclusion of the tournament, the golf bags will be sent to the players' schools where they will be auctioned off to benefit the Folds of Honor Charity.
"It's for such a great cause, honoring fallen soldiers," UTEP coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "It's going to create some great memories for everyone who participates. Everybody who went to it last year was blown away by the experience."
The first round will be played on Dec. 29, with the second round on the 30th and the final round on the 31st.
Patterson played in three tournaments for the Miners this fall, compiling a 75.8 scoring average.
