UTEP Men's Golf Team Tied for 11th After First Day of Season-Opening Tournament
The UTEP men's golf team opened its 2012-13 season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Sunday in Colorado Springs, and the Miners are tied for 11th place through 36 holes.
UTEP got off to a rough start at the tournament, firing 308 as a team in the first round. But the Miners settled down to shoot 288 in the second round for a total of 596. The final round will be played on Monday.
Colorado heads up the 16-team field (281-286-567), followed by UNLV (288-284-572) and host Air Force (288-287-575).
UTEP senior and El Paso native Devin Miertschin built on his strong play this summer by carding a 74 and 72 for a two-over-par 146. He is tied for 29th place, seven strokes behind co-leaders Jason Burstyn of Colorado (68-71-139) and Kyle Westmoreland of Air Force (71-68-139).
The Miners' Jere Pelletier is tied for 31st place (76-71-147), Martin Simonsen is tied for 41st place (80-69-149) and David Persons is tied for 66th place (78-76-154). UTEP's fifth player, Luke Ovenden, withdrew on Sunday due to stomach illness.
