UTEP Men's Golf Enjoys Second-Day Surge at Jim West Intercollegiate

The UTEP men's golf team tied its low round of the 2011-12 season on Monday, climbing from sixth place to fifth at the Jim West Intercollegiate in Victoria, Texas.

The Miners shot 287 as a team, matching their total from the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate on Jan. 30 in Tucson.

UTEP's two-day total is 582 (295-287). Idaho leads the 12-team field (292-280-572), with Sam Houston State second (290-287-577) and Stephen F. Austin third (284-296-580).

UTEP freshman Martin Simonsen stands in third place with a five-under-par 139 (72-67), just two strokes back of individual leader Jarred Bossio of Idaho (70-66-136).

The Miners' Luke Ovenden is tied for 16th place (76-69-145) after shooting a hole-in-one on the 12th hole Monday.

David Persons (74-76-150) and Jere Pelletier (74-76-150) are tied for 32nd place, Devin Miertschin is tied for 42nd place (73-78-151) and Jerry Castrellon is tied for 66th place (87-75-162).

The final round will be played on Tuesday.
