Jan. 28, 2014
The UTEP men's golf team tied for eighth place at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Tucson. The Miners shot 895 (296-302-297) in a 14-team field that featured six ranked teams.
Fourth-ranked California was the tournament champion (281-285-287-853), with Arizona second (290-291-286-867) and no. 19 New Mexico third (287-293-291-871).
"We kicked a little rust off in this tournament," UTEP coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "There were some bright spots and some good play. We definitely struggled with our bunker play and the short game got us a bit. But we finished the last nine holes pretty well. The guys were hanging in there, even though we didn't score as well as we'd like to. There's still a lot of work to do."
Jere Pelletier tied for 12th place with a five-over-par 218 (69-76-73-218) to lead the Miners. Martin Simonsen tied for 33rd place (78-71-74-223), Jacob Loya tied for 51st place (73-77-80-230), Roberto Ruiz tied for 60th place (76-78-78-232) and Prescott Man tied for 67th place (82-80-72-234). UTEP's Jose Manuel Romero, competing as an individual, tied for 60th place (76-75-81-232).
The Miners' next tournament will be the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational Feb. 8-10 in San Antonio.
