Higgins, Schneider Named C-USA Players of the Week




UTEP junior receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr. was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, whilie junior kicker Reagan Schneider was appointed the league's Special Teams Player of the Week.

Higgins totaled 251 all-purpose yards in UTEP's 44-41, double-overtime victory over Houston on Friday in the Sun Bowl. He caught six passes for a career-high 156 yards. He had five catches for 145 yards after halftime to help the Miners rally from a 16-5 deficit. The Sweeny, Texas native scored three touchdowns, another personal best. He reached the end zone on touchdown passes of 15, 31 and 24 yards from Jordan Palmer, all following the break. His 59-yard kickoff return in the third quarter was a career long as well. Higgins added two punt returns for 41 yards (long of 28) and rushed once for -5 yards.

Schneider established career-highs for field goals (five) and points scored (18) against Houston. His 42-yard field goal in the second overtime proved to be the winning points in UTEP's victory over the Cougars. The five field goals were a school record (previous mark four, held by several players). A native of Canyon Lake, Texas, Schneider connected on field goal attempts of 42, 21, 32, 25 and 42 yards in the game.
